All commercial designated vehicles in Alberta must receive a commercial vehicle inspection. This inspection is performed annually for the owner to receive certification. He or she must be able to provide this certificate when requested by a peace officer.
Any truck or truck-tractor, semi-trailer or trailers with a gross vehicle weight of 4,500 kg if they operate outside the province must be inspected annually. If they have a gross weight of 11,794 kg and operate within the province, they must also have an annual inspection. Vehicles that are used for the transportation of people with a capacity of more than 10 must have semi-annual inspections. Owners of these vehicles are required to find a facility that is licensed by the Vehicle Safety Section to perform the commercial inspection. In addition, the technicians must also be licensed to perform the inspection.
